With their origins in the Roman period, where they were used for stability and in impressive monuments, arched windows have a rich architectural history. Then popular as pointed cathedral and church windows characterizing gothic design or used to achieve symmetrical grandeur in neoclassical buildings, the shape draws the eye and adds beautiful style. While no longer required for their strength, modern arched models are increasingly in trend, softening contemporary lines, letting light stream in, and adding graceful character steeped in tradition. Types of Arched Windows

To have the windows complement different door designs and achieve the desired look, at Neuffer we offer four differently shaped options:

Rounded (single, fanlight, or double)
Segmental (single or double)
Double triangular
Double truncated

In terms of a rounded arch, this is the classic curved form. It can be manufactured with one glazed piece to make for a simple form and allow much light to enter the interior space.

An alternative construction though, that achieves the same shape, is rather to have a rectangular model with a transom bar and curved upper fanlight. While the transom can add character by dividing the glazing, the use of an upper panel and the lower window adds a practical benefit. Both parts can be fixed or operated separately, for example, achieving effective and secure ventilation.

Our double design of the curved arch window then functions in a similar way. Constructed using two rectangular windows with a semi-circular fanlight stretching over them, the different elements can also be operated independently of one another. Customers can then decide whether a central mullion bar should be vertically present between the lower windows. If it is not, particularly open views can be created.

Compared to a rounded form, our segmental models feature a flatter top and cut a subtler look. They are available as a single sash model or rather as double variants where two segmentally arched halves meet in the middle to form a curve. As with our rounded model, for the double sash variant customers can decide whether there should be a central mullion bar.

For clients who want to create a more striking or particularly unique first impression, further options are available. Ideal for gables where large fronts can extend to the roof, our double pointed window features a triangular top formed from two symmetrical trapezoid-shaped sashes, for example. The double truncated model then creates a similar shape, just with a flatter top. This has the window structurally fit with a variety of different buildings and roof types while adding a more ornate style.

Innovative European Opening Mechanisms

At Neuffer we pioneer opening mechanisms where maximum security and safety meet excellent ventilation and insulation. Thanks to the systems' versatility, there are a range of options for windows and fanlights, including:

Glazed
Tilt and turn
Tilt-only
Turn-only

To achieve optimal function and structurally suit different buildings, an arched window can feature various combinations of the above mechanisms.

The entire product and all parts could be fixed and not open, for instance. This provides maximum security and can be ideal if the space already has sufficient airing or is small.

On the other hand, a rounded arch double window could have one lower sash that turns to swing open, a tilt and turn option on the second lower sash, and a tiltable upper fanlight. The systems typically work by turning the handle. In terms of a tilt-only or turn-only mechanism, when the handle is moved 90°, the window can respectively be tilted ajar to the interior or inwardly swung open on hinges. When it comes to a tilt and turn opening, both these options are made possible – tilting when the handle is at 90° and turning at 180°. For particularly large windows where fanlights may be located quite high up, we can alternatively supply a motor-powered tilt opening.

As tilt and turn mechanisms enable the window to open to different degrees, they are ideal for securely airing homes to different extents. A tilted fanlight can provide a subtle yet steady breeze, for example, and be out of reach from intruders while a fully turned sash fully airs interiors. With a customizable number of locking plates and quality metal fittings, the systems are particularly robust and can be tailored to suit different security requirements. Child safety features like sash opening limiters, which restrict how far the window can open to, are then also available.

Choosing the Ideal Frame Material

Whatever type of arch or opening is chosen, a variety of materials are available. Able to affect both the final appearance and practical properties of the window, each option brings its own unique benefits, from excellent insulation to charming patterns, sturdiness, and resistance. Which material will be best for your build or renovation depends on your priorities. For clients who are after a more affordable and modern low-maintenance option, we tend to recommend uPVC. Featuring multiple integrated chambers that trap air inside the frame, the material also slows energy loss via conduction, making for effective thermal insulation.

Customers who are after a more traditional touch may prefer a wooden frame. From pine and light spruce to oak or eucalyptus, we offer different types of sustainably sourced timber that make for charming patterns and shades. The natural material is also very strong and sturdy.

Compared to uPVC and timber, aluminium is then particularly weather-resistant. Anodised during manufacturing, the metal is anti-rust and won't corrode. Durability and strong impact resistance can be relied on, meaning the product is particularly well protected from break-in attempts.

The Finishing Touches – Bespoke Features

To supply truly bespoke products, at Neuffer we offer a range of surface finishes and add-ons.

uPVC arched windows can feature an innovative Aluplast aludec or woodec coating, for example. As highly authentic-looking decors, these finishes have the uPVC product replicate a natural timber or metallic surface in both appearance and texture. Applied via a high temperature foiling process, all uPVC finishes, from RAL base shades to decors, are added professionally during manufacturing to ensure UV-resistance and durable vibrance. In a similar way, finishes for aluminium surfaces are applied via professional powder coating whereas timber can fashion various water-based varnishes and acrylic tones.

Beyond colour, the exact dimension of the product can be set within our possible ranges and matching glazing bars can be added that bring traditional charm.
